Link to the North Norfolk Reed Cutters Association

And this is where it all comes from – well, much of it anyway.

Reed cutting has been a way of life for generations of people in Norfolk.  The reed grow without the need for additional fertiliser or pesticide and the beds themselves also create an important habitat for wildlife.  Add to that the fact that this particular land is really no good for anything else and you can see that your thatched roof is providing so many things including work, natural habitat and valuable land usage.

Quite amazing that on a roof, Norfolk reed can last up to 70 years!  Not great news for thatchers I guess with only one visit per generation!!

Anyway, an interesting site and well worth a visit.

“This is the website for the North Norfolk Reed Cutters Association, the organisation that represents the cutters that manage the reed beds of the North Norfolk Coast and the Broads Reed and Sedge Cutters Association which represents cutters working in the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads.”

Fascinating footage of a thatcher at work from YouTube.

Not exactly a thrilled-packed ride, but well worth a watch for lovers of thatch and thatching.

Radio blaze averted

A serious fire at a thatched property in Three Legged Cross, Dorset was narrowly averted earlier this month after fire crews promptly attended a domestic fire started when a plastic radio was left on an oven hob which was subsequently turned on by accident. Despite sustaining extensive smoke damage, the property was fortunate to be spared worse harm.

Firefighters Protect Thatched Properties

Published on Tuesday 8 November 2011 18:42

MORE than 40 firefighters were called out to a massive blaze near Buckland on Monday night.
Emergency services were called out to the scene at around 8.35pm which saw agricultural outbuildings ablaze on the road from the junction of Lower Icknield Way and Buckland Road, near Buckland Village.

Firefighters also had to protect nearby properties with hoses, as embers from the fire were landing on the homes’ thatched roofs.

The wooden outbuildings at the scene, which are thought to have caught fire accidentally, are believed to have contained tractors, agricultural machinery and a car.

The fire service succeeded in removing all the items from within the building, but one of the structures was left 90 per cent damaged by the blaze.

38% saving on thatched property insurance

Blowing one's own trumpet isn't always a good idea!  We've all done it and we've all suffered as a result.  However, given the price hikes currently being experienced in the Thatched Property Insurance Market at this moment in time, I can't help myslef.

WE - EXPORT AND GENERAL INSURANCE SERVICES LTD (Thatched Property Insurance Division) - have once again saved one of our clients a massive amount of money on thier thatched buildings and contents insurance!  The story is like this:

Existing insurer renewal quote: just over £1,300 premium with an excess of nearly £1,000
Our Quote Number 1: just under £1,600 premium and an excess of £500
Our Quote Number 2: just over £800 permium with an excess of £100

Clearly our Quote Number 2 was accepted and incepted with insurers - as the insurance cover in all 3 cases is pretty much identical.  Using a broker who knows what they are doing will get results!  Our reelationship with the insurers who support us is the key to our success.

Spread the word!
